The Golden North Hotel in Skagway Alaska, claims their hotel is haunted by two ghosts. The first is a simply a strange light form that haunts room fourteen . The light is said to move around the room and no one seems to know why or what it is. This weird effect is not the only thing that has scared or alarmed guests.

Over 100 years ago in about 1898, a beautiful young lady named Mary was staying at the hotel while her fiancé went off to work.  She was said to be only about 19 years of age.  It was rummored that her finance' went on a gold digging expedition, and his intention was to make a great fortune and one day  return for her so they could live happily forever.

She waited for a very, very long time for her lover to return, but the longer she waited the more distressed she became.   As time went on she became consumed by worry; had he been hurt and killed?  Trampled by a moose, or attacked by a big bear, or maybe he has frozen to death.  Was it possible that he did find a great fortune and simply left her behind? Or could it be that he found another woman?  Maybe he is with another women in this very hotel?  All these possibiliies worried her imensley.  To cope with the emotional distress she developed quite an affection to drinking.   Eventually her fondness of the drink had very negative effects on her health.  As time went on she became ill but still she continued to drink.   Consumed by grief and sadness she became more and more depressed, until finally one day she was simply found dead in her room.  The odd part was she was found wearing her wedding dress.  While a very said story, the legacy of Mary lives on.

Today, the hotel reports that many guests claim to have seen a ghostly figure of a woman roaming around the building.  Some guests even claim that they saw a figure of a young woman dressed in white reaching out to choke them during night.   Maybe Mary is still roaming the hotel looking for  her lover suspecting that she might find him in bed with another....

The hotel has a nearby brewery.  They decided to make the a special brew in Mary’s honor.  The Skagway Brewing company now makes a ghostly brew called a "Mary's Pale Ale”.
