History of the Juneau Aquarium Society

The Juneau Aquarium Society was founded in 1990. In 1997 we began using the world wide web to communicate with our members. We intended to increase the fun of the aquarium hobby by sharing information about successful aquarium techniques with others. Anyone interested in aquariums was encouraged to participate. We shared information about aquariums and their inhabitants because we felt that it improved the hobby.
Over the seven years of the aquarium society we participated in several community services, like the Juneau litter cleanup days, working the phone banks for the local public television membership drives, and canned food drives for the local food bank. Other projects included publishing a monthly newsletter, and subscription for the local library of a popular aquarium magazine, participation in the Juneau Time Capsule 1994, and working on the local humane society fundraisers. We set up several booths over the years at the Pet Festival an annual fundraising event for the Gastineau Humane Society. We got together for monthly meetings, printed tee-shirts with our logo (above), we hosted beach walks, and other events. At our meetings we discussed fish and aquarium related topics, and shared friendship and a sense of community with each other.
At the end of 1997, two very active board members moved out of town. In December 1997 our bylaws called for elections of new officers and the current officers were hopeful that if new officers could be elected it would allow the club to continue. We requested nominations for new officers from the current membership, and no nominations were received. The remaining three officers decided that in this case we no longer had a going concern and could not keep the organization alive by ourselves, without more active participation from the current membership.
No meetings or newsletters have been published in 1998. We have been hoping that a few interested and energetic people may come around and be interested in re-vitalizing the group. At this time this seems to be only a wish. The treasurer donated our last $90.00 balance to the Gastineau Humanne Society in the laste 90's.
